Engineered Sulfated Polysaccharides for Biomedical Applications

Sulfated polysaccharides are ubiquitous in living systems and have central roles biological functions such as organism development, cell proliferation differentiation, cellular communication, tissue homeostasis, host defense. Engineered sulfated (ESPs) structural derivatives not found nature but generated through chemical enzymatic modification of natural polysaccharides, well chemically synthesized oligo- polysaccharides. ESPs exhibit novel augmented properties compared with their unmodified counterparts, mainly facilitating interactions other macromolecules. These closely linked to sulfation patterns backbone structures, providing a means fine-tune characterize structural–functional relationships by employing well-characterized strategies for regioselective modification. The following review provides comprehensive overview the synthesis characterization properties. Through pioneering research presented here, key emerging application areas ESPs, which can lead breakthroughs biomedical clinical treatments, highlighted.
